The Canadian Connemara Pony Society (CCPS) is the only society recognized under the Animal Pedigree Act that can register Connemara ponies in Canada. Details of registration can be found in the CCPS Bylaws, Article 17. Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) is the body that maintains the registry under the rules set down by the CCPS.

All forms for registering ponies can be found on the CCPS and the CLRC websites. Registration fees are set by the Society and are collected by CLRC and remitted to the Society. Applications should be sent to CLRC at 2417 Holly Lane, Ottawa, Ont. K1V 0M7 and cheques or money order made out to Canadian Livestock Records Corporation.

Owners do not have to be members of the CCPS, but fees are doubled for non-members.

The breeder of a foal is the owner or lessee of the dam at the time she was served by the stallion. The first owner of the foal is the owner or lessee of the dam at the time the foal was born. The first owner of the foal must complete the initial registration. If the foal is sold before registration, the registration must be considered a transfer from the first owner and the appropriate fees paid.

The farm prefix used in the registered name of the foal must be that of the owner or lessee where the foal was born.

Purebred Ponies

All purebred Connemaras can be registered with in CCPS registry as long as both parents are registered with a Connemara pony society recognized by the Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society (CPBS) of Ireland.

Foals born in Canada can only be registered with the CCPS.

To register a filly foal or an ungelded colt foal, the application should be made within six months of birth or the fee is increased. The application form should be sent to CLRC who will send the owner a DNA kit which must be returned with the appropriate mane hairs. On receipt of this, CLRC proceeds with the application and a Foal Identity Document will be issued. Fillies and ungelded colts must be tested for Hoof Wall Separation Disease (HWSD) (unless both sire and dam have proof of being N/N i.e. non carriers), and the results sent to CLRC.

All application forms for registration must be signed by the owner of the foal at time of birth and must be accompanied by a Certificate of Service signed by the owner of the sire at the time of service.

Applications for foals bred by Artificial Insemination must be accompanied by a Certificate of Collection signed by stallion owner and veterinarian or AI technician at the time of collection and a Certificate of Insemination of the mare, signed by a veterinarian or AI technician.

At age two, purebred fillies can obtain permanent registration. The application must include a vet certificate of height at two years of age, two colour photographs, one of each side, and the required fee. Mares under 147cm at two years of age are entered in Section 17.2.2a and mares over 147 cm at two years of age are entered in Section 17.2.2b.

Ungelded colts can obtain permanent registration in Section 17.2.1. The application must be accompanied by two coloured photographs, one of each side, a vet’s certificate of height of under 147cm at two years of age, the stallion registration fee and a certificate of veterinary inspection. Use the same veterinary inspection form as for stallion inspection.

Geldings do not need to be DNA or HWSD tested and will receive permanent registration without going through the process of a Foal Identity Document as long as the application is accompanied by a signed veterinary certificate of gelding. Geldings can be registered up to the 30 June in the year following their birth with no increase in the registration fee. After this time period, the registration fee will be doubled.

Halfbred Ponies and Horses

To be eligible for registration in the halfbred section of the stud books, ponies must have one purebred parent registered in the CCPS registry or any registry approved by the CPBS. Ponies with one purebred and one halfbred parent are still considered only halfbreds. Ponies with two halfbred parents are not eligible for registration. Ponies with two purebred parents but only one of which is fully and correctly registered will be considered halfbreds. Ponies that are the result of inbreeding as defined in Section 17.6 will only be eligible for registration as halfbred.

Halfbred entire colts will be issued with a Foal Identity Document only. Both DNA and HWSD testing is required. Fillies and halfbred geldings will be issued permanent registration on receipt of their foal application. No DNA or HWSD testing is required. All halfbred geldings must have proof of gelding, signed by a veterinarian.

Imported Ponies

Ponies imported from any country recognized by the CPBS are eligible to be transferred into the appropriate section of the CCPS registry. This includes ponies with ACPS registrations. It is not compulsory to transfer registrations but any transfers must be accompanied by the registration papers from the country of origin. Purebred ponies must be DNA genotyped and HWSD tested according to the requirements of the CCPS.

Applications must be accompanied by two colour photos, one of each side of the pony and the appropriate fee.

Mature ponies will not be required to provide a veterinary certificate of height, but a two-year-old applying for a permanent registration transfer to the CCPS registry will require such a certificate.

Mature Registrations

Ponies that have not been registered as foals are still eligible for registration. Use the Application for Permanent Registration form and note that this is the first time the pony has been registered. Mares born after 2005 must be DNA and HWSD tested. All stallions must be DNA and HWSD tested except stallions that were blood typed for registration before DNA testing became available. These will not be required to be DNA tested.

Inspected Ponies

All ponies must be registered to be eligible for inspection. When a pony passes inspection and two years of age or above, it will be moved from the Registry to the International Stud Book. The pony’s registration certificate will be stamped at the time of inspection and will receive CLRC’s permanent identification on its certificate when that pony is transferred or if the owner wishes to renew the certificate.

Transfer of Ownership

The seller completes the Application for Transfer of Ownership found on the reverse side of the pony's Certificate of Registration. Mail the Certificate of registration and fee to the CLRC. Please see the fee schedule for the amount.
